ATENEO PROF WINS INT’L BOOK AWARD

A PROFESSOR from the Ateneo de Manila University won the prestigious International Book Prize 2021 given by the International Institute for Asian Studies-International Convention of Asia Scholars.

Dr. Stephanie Coo of ADMU’s History Department received the Best Book in Humanities-English Edition award for her book titled “Clothing the Colony: Nineteenth-Century Philippine Sartorial Culture, 1820- 1896.”

Coo’s book tackled the role of clothing in the relationship between the Spanish colonizers and Filipinos. It is also a comprehensive study that includes children, workers, traders, race, class, gender, religion, economy.

“Of the 247 global entries, Coo’s book was the only book shortlisted from Asia,” ADMU said.

Coo served as head of the Internationalization Committee/Coordinator for Internationalization of ADMU’s History Department from 2018 to 2019.

She completed her PhD in History (summa cum laude) at the Université Nice Sophia Antipolis, having been unanimously conferred the highest distinction in the French university system.

Currently, Coo is a Marie Curie Postdoctoral fellow at the Universidad de Granada in Spain and NOVA School of Law-Universidade Nova de Lisboa in Portugal.
