ANTIQUE LAUNCHES COLLEGE EDUCATION FOR INMATES

/ 5 February 2024

THE UNIVERSITY of Antique officially launched a project helping inmates in the province get a college education in a bid to create a ‘better, safe community, and a nation’.

Dubbed ‘Holistic Opportunities and People’s Empowerment’, the project enrolled inmates at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in San Jose District Jail in Antique to help them earn their college degree and diploma.

Twenty five inmates are enrolled in the program, which was officially launched last week.

Under the program, the student-inmates will be lectured with modern equipment like desktop computers, Smart TVs, projectors, and printers to help them with their studies.

BJMP will also provide interventions in areas of health and nutrition, psychoeducation and meaning-making activities, health meal planning, and various training under the program.

A total of P2,439,868 was allocated for the project, which will be sourced from the Department of Science and Technology Region 6.

A different set of training for inmates who are not qualified under HOPE but would want to have an education will also be under a different program, which can earn them a national certification.
