GATCHALIAN PUSHES SCHOOL SAFETY, MENTAL HEALTH FUNDING AFTER CDO STABBING
SENATE President Sherwin Gatchalian has vowed to push for adequate funding for school safety initiatives and mental health programs following a stabbing incident at Macabalan Elementary School in Cagayan de Oro City.
Gatchalian expressed alarm over the incident, underscoring the urgent need to address violence in schools and strengthen measures to protect learners.
He urged the Department of Education (DepEd) and the local government unit to provide assistance to the victim and ensure that appropriate interventions are extended to the child in conflict with the law.
The senator also reaffirmed his commitment to securing sufficient funding for school safety programs, the School-Based Mental Health Program, and the hiring of School Counselor Associates.
He emphasized that sustained investments in school security and mental health services are essential to preventing violence, identifying learners who may need intervention, and ensuring that students have access to appropriate support.
Gatchalian stressed that protecting learners requires a comprehensive approach that combines effective school safety measures with accessible mental health services to safeguard their well-being and ensure a safe learning environment.
