SENATOR PROPOSES CONVERSION OF DORSU EXTENSION CAMPUSES INTO FULL-FLEDGED UNITS

/ 13 April 2026

SENATOR Christopher Lawrence Bong Go is seeking to convert the extension campuses of Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) in the municipalities of Baganga, Cateel, and Tarragona into regular campuses.

In Senate Bill No. 1762, Go emphasized that education is a fundamental right and a vital tool for socio-economic development, particularly in underserved areas such as these municipalities in Davao Oriental.

He noted that, as the province’s premier state university, DOrSU is mandated to provide accessible, quality, and relevant higher education to support both local and regional development.

Go also cited Republic Act No. 11033, signed into law on May 28, 2018 by former President Rodrigo Duterte, which converted the Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology in Mati City, along with its satellite campuses, into a state university now known as DOrSU.

However, the senator pointed out that the extension campuses in Baganga, Cateel, and Tarragona remain limited in terms of academic programs, personnel, and facilities due to their current operational status.

Based on the 2024 Census of Population, Baganga has 59,796 residents, Cateel has 45,623, and Tarragona has 27,349—highlighting the growing demand for accessible higher education in these areas.

Go stressed that many students face geographic and financial barriers to pursuing tertiary education outside their municipalities, underscoring the need for localized access to complete academic programs.

By converting these extension campuses into full-fledged campuses, DOrSU would be able to expand its course offerings, improve facilities, and hire more faculty and staff—ultimately promoting equitable access to education and supporting the region’s human capital development.
