LAWMAKER CALLS FOR URGENT PASSAGE OF YOUTH SUICIDE PREVENTION BILL AMID RISING MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS

SENATOR Bong Go has underscored the urgent need to strengthen mental health protections for Filipino youth amid a troubling rise in anxiety, depression, and suicidal behavior.

“Let us act now to ensure our youth are supported, heard, and never abandoned in times of mental health crises,” Go said.

The senator made the statement while presiding over a public hearing of the Senate Committee on Youth, where discussions centered on Senate Bill Nos. 258 and 1948, collectively referred to as the proposed Youth Suicide Prevention Act.

The measure seeks to establish a comprehensive framework to prevent suicide among young Filipinos. Key provisions include intensified mental health awareness campaigns, early intervention strategies, and expanded access to counseling and support services.

Go stressed the urgency of passing the legislation, citing alarming data that one in five Filipino youth have considered suicide, while 7.5 percent—equivalent to around 1.5 million individuals—have attempted to take their own lives.

He emphasized that early intervention, alongside stronger community-based support systems, is crucial in addressing the growing mental health crisis among the youth.

The proposed bill also aims to make mental health services more accessible, particularly for teenagers who may be struggling in silence, and to create safe, stigma-free spaces where they can seek help and receive proper care.
