SENATOR BACKS GREATER AUTONOMY FOR SCHOOL PRINCIPALS AMID EDUCATION CRISIS
SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian on Thursday called for granting greater autonomy and flexibility to school principals, emphasizing their vital role in addressing the country’s worsening education crisis.
“We need to give our principals more autonomy and flexibility in addressing the needs of our learners. If every school is a battleground in reversing the education crisis and principals are at the forefront, we must ensure that they are empowered,” Gatchalian said.
Citing a 2016 study by the World Bank and Australian Aid, the senator noted that student performance improves significantly when schools are effectively managed and governed—highlighting the crucial role of school leadership in improving educational outcomes.
“In addressing the education crisis, the role of our principals is critical. They are closest to our learners and understand their needs best, so we must help them succeed,” he added.
Gatchalian, who chairs the Senate Committee on Basic Education, has consistently pushed for reforms in school governance, including the decentralization of certain decision-making processes to allow school heads more discretion over budget allocation, resource management, and curriculum adjustments tailored to local contexts.
He emphasized that real change in the education system will only happen if those on the ground—especially school leaders—are equipped with the authority, tools, and support they need to make a meaningful impact.
