SENATOR BACKS RETENTION OF EDUCATION SECRETARY AMID CABINET REVIEW

/ 28 May 2025

SENATOR Joel Villanueva has expressed confidence that Education Secretary Juan Edgardo Angara will retain his post amid the Cabinet revamp initiated by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

He cited Angara’s accomplishments and commitment to public service.

Villanueva also voiced support for the President’s directive urging Cabinet officials to submit courtesy resignations, saying the move reinforces the administration’s intent to strengthen governance by ensuring that every department delivers on its mandate to the Filipino people.

“It’s time to remove those in government who are not delivering,” Villanueva asserted, emphasizing that agencies must meet public expectations.

He cited the Department of Health as an example of underperformance, highlighting that its current secretary has reportedly traveled abroad 19 times since being appointed in 2023—equivalent to nearly one trip every two months.

The senator also flagged unresolved issues within the DOH, including ₱11.8 billion worth of wasted medicines and medical supplies.

In contrast, Villanueva lauded Angara’s track record at DepEd, saying it would be unfortunate to lose a performing official.

“If we’re going to talk about accomplishments, it’s clear that Secretary Angara has delivered,” he said

He underscored the need for Cabinet officials who will work hard and implement programs that truly benefit the people, reiterating his trust in Angara’s ability to contribute meaningfully to national development through the education sector.
