PH SEEKING CONTINUED EDUCATION AND HEALTH ASSISTANCE FROM THE U.S.

/ 26 February 2025

FOLLOWING the exemption of US military aid to the Philippines from a global aid freeze under the Trump administration, Philippine Ambassador to Washington Jose Manuel ‘Babe’ Romualdez revealed that Manila is now working to secure continued assistance for education and health programs from its longtime ally.

Romualdez expressed optimism that these critical aid programs would also receive a waiver, given their significance to US foreign policy.

He emphasized the importance of education and health aid, noting that the Philippines has already submitted a position paper advocating for its continuation. Romualdez pointed out that such programs align with the U.S. strategy of soft power, strengthening diplomatic and economic ties.

“These programs play a crucial role in maintaining strong bilateral relations, and we hope they will be granted exemptions as well,” he said.

The ambassador also shared Manila’s aspirations for increased military aid from Washington, highlighting the Philippines’ efforts to modernize its Armed Forces. He stressed that enhancing the country’s defense capabilities is a priority, especially given security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.

“We are hoping for even larger aid packages as we push for rapid modernization of our military,” Romualdez said, citing regional tensions as a key concern.
