LAWMAKER PUSHES FOR CRASH COURSE ON MARITIME ZONES LAW

/ 23 January 2025

SENATE Majority Leader Francis Tolentino has emphasized the need for the Philippine Coast Guard  to require its 4,000 new recruits to undergo a crash course on the newly enacted Philippine Maritime Zones Act, in order to better understand current issues, especially the conflict in the West Philippine Sea.

Tolentino made the proposal to the PCG through its spokesperson, Commodore Algier Ricafrente.

“Beyond basic training and physical formations, the PCG’s new recruits must undergo a crash course on the Philippine Maritime Zones Act,” said Tolentino, the law’s principal author. “This will help them better understand the boundaries of our territorial sea, international waters, and exclusive economic zone, especially when there are challenges posed by foreign ships entering the West Philippine Sea.”

Ricafrente noted that the new recruits, who will be deployed to regional offices, will bolster the PCG’s personnel, which currently stands at 35,000.

The coast guard official also welcomed the Senate’s recent passage of House Bill 10841, which establishes a three-year fixed term for the PCG Commandant.

Ricafrente said the measure would allow the PCG leadership to implement long-term plans and programs that would benefit maritime safety and security.

Tolentino, a co-author of the measure, agreed. He emphasized that aside from safeguarding the nation’s territory, the PCG also plays a crucial role in responding to disasters, such as oil spills, and ensuring the safety and livelihood of fisherfolk and sea travelers.
