THE ATENEO de Manila University has honored seven exemplary individuals in this year’s Traditional University Awards, celebrating outstanding achievements across various fields and their contributions to Philippine society.

This prestigious award, which dates back to the 1930s, acknowledges individuals whose work embodies the values of Ateneo and fosters social change and progress.

For 2024, the university’s Board of Trustees selected the following honorees, each recognized for their dedication to their respective causes:

Ricardo G. Abad, a social scientist, teacher, and artist, received the Gawad Tanglaw ng Lahi for his transformative contributions in academia and the arts, fostering a deeper understanding of Filipino culture.

Raissa H. Jajurie was honored with the Government Service Award for her impactful work with the Bangsamoro region, promoting peace, justice, and empowerment for its people.

Maria Fatima Garcia-Lorenzo, founder of the Kythe Foundation, received the Ozanam Award for her dedication to pediatric care, offering holistic support to children and their families as they navigate challenging medical journeys.

Alberto M. Malvar was given the Lux-in-Domino Award for his conservation efforts in the Upper Marikina Watershed, where he also advocates for the rights of the indigenous Dumagat community.

Florencio Louis Antonio C. Quintos II received the Gawad Tanglaw ng Lahi for his extensive contributions to modern Philippine theater, enriching Filipino cultural appreciation through his groundbreaking work.

Flaviano L. Villanueva, SVD, a tireless advocate for marginalized communities, was presented with the Bukas Palad Award for his commitment to supporting the families of victims of extrajudicial killings and other vulnerable populations.

Leila M. de Lima was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Sociology, in recognition of her commitment to human rights, social justice, and the rule of law, even in the face of personal adversity. De Lima’s honorary degree will be formally conferred at Ateneo’s 2025 Commencement Exercises.

This year’s honorees join an esteemed roster of previous awardees, including Senator Risa Hontiveros (Government Service Award, 2023), Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle (Honorary Doctorate, 2023), and National Artist Nick Joaquin (Gawad Tanglaw ng Lahi, 1997).
