DEAD MAN WALKING

/ 4 January 2021

I don’t know if I’m just lost or hasn’t been found but I know one thing is for sure, I don’t know where I am going. I don’t know what direction I am taking. I just let the air and my feet take me. I was always walking with no direction in my mind. I didn’t even know why I’m here.

“Where are you going, lovely lady?”

The sun was at its peak as I wiped my forehead as I started sweating. My thoughts were interrupted by someone whom I consider a friend. I didn’t notice that Open-Mindedness was looking at me intently while he was sitting in his favorite chair, just in front of his house. He was reading the daily newspaper with his coffee cup on his coffee table just beside him.

“Going somewhere again, huh?”

He was smiling as if he was used to seeing me always like this. Open-Mindedness was a person whom you can go to and just have a talk. He’s the kind of person that is always ready to listen with no judgement. He’s open to everything.

“Just passing by.” I said as I looked at the time at my wristwatch. I don’t even know why I’m still looking at the time because I don’t really know where I am going.

“Are you looking for something again?” he asked as he sipped in his coffee.

“I am always looking for something.” That’s true. I am looking for something even I don’t know.

“Well then, just keep looking. You will find it eventually.”

I smiled and nodded. I continued walking without looking back. I don’t have the time to talk to Open-Mindedness. I felt that I needed to keep up with my walking.

There were many people outside but none of them were familiar to me. None of them looked or even took a moment to glance at me. It seems as if they’re busy with their lives. I felt envious, it looked like they really know what to do with their lives. Unlike me.

“Hey there!”

My thoughts were again interrupted by someone who was running very fast as if there was no time for him to run. Spirit Of Adventure was wearing his usual smile and I can see his big bag hanging on his shoulder.

“Going somewhere?” I asked. I can’t help but smile too because he is somewhat contagious.

“Yup! Adventure always awaits, you know.” he said that with a wide smile.

“Don’t you have anything else to do? You’re always on an adventure, you’re always running..” I can’t help but be confused. Spirit Of Adventure always seems like he has all the time in his life. I’ve always seen him running, I never saw him stop. Just this time because we’re talking.

“It’s because I don’t want to stop. I don’t ever want to stop because to tell you the truth, no one knows how much time we got left in this world. And whenever I can still run, I keep on moving. Because stopping can take on the seconds, minute, and time I have left.”

Hearing those words from him made me just look at him.

“I gotta go, Dear.” He continued running, I didn’t get the chance to say goodbye or even nod at him.

“Oh wait!” As I stood there still consuming what he had just said, I heard him shout which made me look back.

“Maybe we can go on an adventure together, if you can just learn to stop for a while.”

He was smiling but this time, I felt his smile as something that is encouraging me to go with him. But I can’t..  We both smiled and nodded at each other and he continued running, while I continued going to nowhere.

Walking with no direction has been a thing to me. It’s like I have been doing this in my whole life. I have always kept on going with the flow of life, which I think is not a good thing to do.

Creativity was busy on his new canvas. He has always been like this, he always works on a new painting everyday. I never saw him stop painting. It seems like his imaginations were unlimited.

“Hey.” Creativity stopped whatever he’s doing and took a glance at me. He automatically smiled as he saw me.

“Oh, hey there! Didn’t see you coming.”

“Was there a time in your life that you ever ran out of ideas? Like, your mind went blank for a while and you felt that for a moment, you don’t know what to paint anymore?”

He put down his palette and brush. I looked at all his paintings that are displayed outside. He smiled again as he said,

“Every time. But that did not make me stop doing what I love the most.”

“And what is it you love doing the most?”

I asked.

“It’s to scatter colors every time I run out of ideas so that I can build new ideas. My mind went blank all the time, but that does not stop me from doing something. Because stopping makes me forget what I love doing the most.”

As he said those words, he picked up his palette and paintbrush and then continued painting. He painted again as if he there was no one around. I started to feel like a bother to him that’s why I continued walking without saying another word to him.

Beside Creativity’s house was Consistency’s house. As I passed by Consistency’s, he was there on a chair outside his house. He was looking at his garden, or maybe at nothingness.

“Good day, Consistency.” I said as I waved at him. Consistency looked at my way and smiled sadly. I know confusion was written all over my face.

“How have you been doing?” I can’t help but ask in hopes of getting a clear answer on why he seems off today.

“I feel useless. I feel like everything I’ve been doing for everyone is going nowhere. I don’t feel appreciated anymore.”

“Maybe because everyone knows you’re always there for them. And I think because of that, they now took you for granted, right?”

People. Just because they know that some people are always there for them, they start to abuse or worse, take them for granted. Because they always know that whatever happens, you’re always there for them.

Consistency stared at his garden, thinking.

“I have always been consistent on everything. Everything they want to do, everything that they are good at, I was always there. I was always helping them. But then, they just stopped doing what they were always doing. They stopped doing what they love the most. I felt out of place. I think that they do not need me anymore.”

He said those words with a blank expression.

“But then again, I’m still here. I’m always here. When they come back and need me again, I’m still here.”

He was smiling as he said those last words. A hopeful kind of smile.

“Have you seen Positivity lately?” he asked, changing the topic.

“Uhm, no. I haven’t seen him yet.” I answered.

“You won’t be seeing him.”

“Why is that?” I asked.

“Everyone’s been looking for him. You know people how they need Positivity. But it seems that he vanished.”    It occurred in my mind, I haven’t seen Positivity lately. And I know that deep inside me, I needed to see Positivity. Maybe then, I will know where to go. I will know what direction to take. And after that, I may be able to find what I am looking for.

“Hey, aren’t you still looking for something?”

I looked at Consistency who was still sitting on his chair but is now wearing his encouraging smile.

“I got to go.” I said as I remembered that I still have to go. I still have to search for something.

“Alright. Be safe dear. I hope you won’t forget me.”

“It’s impossible that I’ll forget you, Consistency. I feel like we’ll meet again soon.” I smiled.

“Then I’ll be here when you get back.”

I started walking again thinking about what Consistency said. It seems like this road I’m taking is endless. No destination. Yes, it has stop overs but doesn’t mean we need to stop there forever. We have to keep going and here I am still going, going nowhere..

I stopped for a moment when I saw a poster on a tree that read,

“WANTED:

Commitment & Loyalty

Never been seen since..”

I sighed. Positivity has been missing, so is Commitment and Loyalty. I can’t remember when I had last seen those two. But I can clearly remember that everywhere they go, they were always together. They were inseparable, and I think that’s the way it should always be.

“At Least they have it together, right?”

My thoughts were interrupted by someone who is not familiar to me.

“Commitment and Loyalty, many people are looking for them right now. But most of them just only want Commitment while some just want Loyalty. Haven’t they thought that those two should always be together?”

I looked at him beside me while he was saying those words. He was looking at the poster.

Have I met this person before?

“Maybe that’s why they vanished. Since most people always forget the important thing.”

“And what’s that important thing?” I asked.

“It’s being true to what you feel, say, and do in order for the two to remain. Most people forget those important things because they only focus on the excitement, which is not important to what I just said earlier.” He explained.

I looked at him. “So, you think they’ll come back?” I asked again.

He smiled. “They always come back. They come back to the people who have learned to value the things I just said.”

I can’t help it but ask, “Uh, have we met before?”

He looked at me. “Yes.”

I looked at him, confused.

“But you are not familiar to me.”

His smile never wore off.

“I’m the one you’re looking for, but you didn’t notice that I was with you all this time.”

I was just looking at him. I was really thinking who is in front of me.

“You don’t notice me, right? I’m the one who you were looking for all this time. But you don’t see or even notice me because you were busy looking for something that you do not need yet. You were busy looking for something that isn’t supposed to be there.”

“As for me, I was always here. I was always here with you. But you don’t see that.”

He sadly smiled.

“I am your PASSION.”
