LOOK: SOME OF OUR FAVORITE ‘TRESE’ TWEETS BECAUSE IS IT REALLY MAKING HISTORY IF FILIPINOS AREN’T MAKING MEMES?

It's been well over a week since "Trese" took over Netflix, Filipino social media, and the local entertainment discourse, and our memes folder is getting chunkier and chunkier.

/ 23 June 2021

It’s a mark of a successful pop culture moment for Filipinos when we’re making memes, trending witty topics, and creating inside jokes for a piece of content, and Trese is no different. After its explosive premiere as a Netflix Original Anime on June 11, 2021, the 8-episode series has been a constant topic on social media as viewers applaud its historic achievement as the first non-Japanese Original Anime on the platform (and the first Filipino Netflix anime production at that), and celebrate its impassioned storytelling, and beyond.

The crime-fighting adventures of Alexandra Trese and the rest of Team Trese around this folklore-infested Manila has certainly been the talk of the town since release. If the discussion was first focused on the technical aspects of voice acting, story progression, and its likeliness to the comics, the days that followed opened up the discourse to all the memes we knew were coming.

After all, it’s these organic engagements on social media from viewers that truly cement a series in our country’s colorful pop culture Hall of Fame. And with the amount of fan-created content surrounding Trese‘s anime adaptation, it’s definitely well on its way to join the rest of our local pop culture’s greats.

As Filipinos grew enamored with the world of Trese and everything it stood for, in came the jokes on gossip-mongering nunos, the twins’ attractiveness, and the confused feeling of crushing hard on the leader of the aswangs. It’s been a fun couple of days on the Pinoy side of social media, with all the viral Tweets, TikTok videos, and pieces of fan art that represent just how successful the series was in captivating the Filipino audience.

Here are a few of our favorite Trese-inspired content that made us laugh out loud with the rest of the internet:

Make for the real scene-stealers of Trese, the manananggal and aswang leaders

We, too, would give everything we know away for a piece of Choc-Nut

Red Velvet for Trese soundtrack?

Alexandra Trese rocking salon-perfect hair

Nuno spin-off when?

We love a cross-over

Alexandra Trese understands tiis ganda

The dubbing we didn’t know we needed

From iconic children in Philippine literature, to iconic men in contemporary entertainment. Crispin and Basilio, the newest internet heartthrobs

Of course, all of these are just for fun, but it’s a pretty good sign that means Filipinos are certainly going all-in for their support towards the Trese franchise. Hopefully, this historic moment could go on for more seasons, and can open even more Philippine-original animations to get the attention and support they deserve.
