HERE’S WHY “GAWA SA CANVA” IS NOT REALLY OFFENSIVE

/ 19 March 2022

The platform or software you utilize has no bearing on good design. It’s the result of your imagination. In reality, how you choose and apply Canva’s thousands of pieces to design your work should be considered a skill in and of itself. Even if you use templates and only make minor changes, you’re still using your imagination and creativity, no matter how big or tiny. Because you can make good drawings with any instrument as long as you have aesthetic sensibility.

A few internet users pointed out that the Canva slander usually appears when a design is minimalist, which appears to be the case for the original design. This is a typical design misunderstanding: that because there aren’t many elements in a minimalist design, it was made with little to no effort. However, consider this: minimalist design drives you to better comprehend the material you’re working with, determine the most important components, and eliminate the rest. That isn’t an easy task.

What role does Canva play in all of this? Canva has a lot of minimalist templates (as well as a lot of maximalist designs), so while you’ll still have to find the perfect template for your project, it makes the process easier.

When it comes to templates, much of the Canva smear claims that using Canva makes individuals assume they’re already “graphic artists.” While this may be true for some, it is certainly not true for all users of the platform. It’s unfair to say bad things about them because of a generalization, even if they started from scratch or used a template.

It’s even more crucial to remember that these templates were produced and “vetted” by people who work in the design industry. Allow these designers to be treated with the respect they deserve! Don’t dismiss their work because they adhere to a particular aesthetic for the company they work for. These designers devote time and effort to making design accessible to non-designers.

You won’t be able to learn all of the abilities you’ll need to make good drawings in a single day. Learning design can require years of dedicated study and work, and most of us don’t have that kind of time. Canva simplifies the process and helps people understand what constitutes a good design. It shouldn’t be a negative thing if these barriers are removed.

At the end of the day, Canva has made design accessible to everyone, allowing even non-designers to express themselves. Users can take advantage of templates and ready-made designs to help them get started, but everyone has to start somewhere, right? Use the platform that works best for you! After all, design shouldn’t be held behind closed doors.
