UST athletics director resigns, De Sagon to resume position

University of Santo Tomas' Institute of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA) director Fr. Jannel Abogado stepped down just days after the controversial Bicol bubble fiasco

/ 28 August 2020

The news of his resignation was just hours before the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases’ (IATF-EID) second meeting regarding the said issue.

Support form the alumni and UST women’s volleyball team came pouring in social media after the shocking news of his departure.

UST Growling Tigresses one-two-punch in the Laure sister, Eya and Ej, were among the people who expressed their gratitude towards the former director.

“Thank you Father J!!  sa support, sa tiwala, sa pag-aalaga at sa pagmamahal na pinaramramdam mo samin. Mas minahal ko ang UST dahil sayo.” Eya tweeted along with her selfies and some of the team’s group photo with the former director.

The Laure sister’s mom, Jovie also chimed in tweeting, “We love you Father J! Di alam ng iba anong nagawa mong [m]abuti para sa mga bata pero alam naming na inosente ka dahil alam ko kung gaano ka kahigpit lalo na sa kapakanan ng mga bata. Parang mga anak ang turing mo sa lahat, napakasakit na humantong sa ganito.

Former athletic director Fr. Ermito de Sagon is said to resume his old position due to the sudden vacancy.

The former athletic director served the España community for 16 years before Abogado’s appointment in 2017.

Back in UAAP Season 69, De Sagon led the investigation regarding the De La Salle University men’s basketball team’s eligibility violations from 2003 to 2006, which resulted in the suspension of the school across all events in Season 69.

UST assured in its statement that it will be taking appropriate action concerning the said ‘bubble’ training.
