SCOTTIE THOMPSON POWERS GINEBRA, ERASES 22-POINT DEFICIT TO STUN TERRAFIRMA
Scottie Thompson rallied Barangay Ginebra from the depths to erase a 22-point deficit en route to a 112-107 victory over Terrafirma in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo on Sunday.
The Dyip was up 68-46 early in the third frame but the Gin Kings stormed its way to complete a huge come-from-behind win thanks to Thompson who ignited a massive 24-10 run that eventually saw Ginebra only down by nine, 85-76, at the end of the quarter.
“I think this game, this comeback will go a long way in terms of helping us find ourselves,” Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone said.
“By and large, Scottie willed us to a win just with his tremendous effort everywhere, on the defense, on the boards, in transition, everywhere,” he added.
Come the final frame, the Gin Kings were able to close the gap much further to within three, 96-93, off a three-point play opportunity from Japeth Aguilar before finally taking the lead, 104-103, capped by a long bomb by LA Tenorio with 3:28 remaining in the game.
Terrafirma quickly countered a 4-0 run to snatch the lead, 107-104, but Thompson, Aguilar, and Christian Standhardinger propelled a 6-0 run to give Ginebra back the lead, 110-107, with 31 seconds left.
Juami Tiongson could have saved the day for Terrafirma but failed to convert on his three-point attempt as Justine Brownlee sealed the deal in the next play with two free throws.
Resident import Brownlee led the scoring with a game-high 29 points, to go along with 15 rebounds and 7 assists, while Standhardinger added 26 markers.
Thompson finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds as Ginebra improved to 5-4 while the Dyip sank to 2-7 behind a three-game losing skid.
Meanwhile, Tiongson top-scored for Terrafirma with 27 points, while Joshua Munzon and import Antonio Hester ended with 23 and 18 markers, respectively.
Ginebra looks to maintain its pace for a quarterfinal spot as they face NLEX Road Warriors on Friday at 6 pm while Terrafirma takes on NorthPort Batang Pier on Saturday at 4 pm.
