CHESS enthusiasts will be thrilled as the Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence (PACE) gears up to host an exhilarating blitz and rapid tournament on March 30-31.

To be held at its headquarters in Mindanao Avenue, Quezon City, this event promises to showcase the talents of promising players from across the region.

On March 30, players boasting Elo ratings of 1899 and below will showcase their skills, while March 31 will witness competition among those with ratings of 1599 and below.

Leading the charge in this National Chess Federation of the Philippines-sanctioned event will be none other than National Master Nika Juris Nicolas.

At just 12 years old, Nicolas, hailed as Pasig City’s top player, is no stranger to the limelight. Expressing her anticipation for the event, she stated, “I hope to excel in this tournament and bolster my Elo rating points.”

Nicolas, who earned the title of the country’s youngest NM two years ago, currently boasts Elo ratings of 1579 (standard), 1455 (rapid), and 1596 (blitz).

Her remarkable talent will also be showcased on the international stage as she represents the Philippines in the upcoming World Cadet Rapid & Blitz Championships scheduled for April 25-29, 2024, in Durres, Albania.

Reflecting on the broader objectives of the tournament, Nikki de Vega, legal counsel for the NCFP, highlighted its aim to cultivate strategic thinking, enhance logical abilities, and foster camaraderie among participants.

Indeed, beyond the thrill of competition, events like these serve as catalysts for personal growth and community engagement.
