OBIENA DENIES MISUSE OF TRAINING FUND, SAYS LEFT HIM WITH A ‘RETIREMENT’ CHOICE
Filipino vaulter Ej Obiena won’t back down from Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (Patafa) after slamming with the alleged falsified documents and unpaid salaries.
Patafa claimed Obiena falsified his liquidation reports funded for his Tokyo Olympics and ordered him to return €85,000 (over P4.8 million) to the national sporting association.
As such, the Olympian said that the accusations are just mere hearsay and none of it is true which made his reputation in a bad situation.
“All I can say, with documented evidence, is these rumors are 100 percent false and represent nothing more than character assassination,” said Obiena in a post on his social media account.
“I have prided myself in embracing values of discipline, competitiveness, honor, transparency, and respect. This doesn’t change even in times of crisis,” he added.
However, despite his mindset, Obiena averred at a press conference with Ukrainian coach Vitaliy Petrov yesterday that with the current situation he will be pushed to the edge not to train and do his normal athlete routine.
“With the current situation, I cannot train. It’s impossible for me to even perform the way I should because of these distractions,” Obiena explained.
“I think it’s something that I don’t really want to discuss, but if push comes to shove, I’m only here in the field of sport because I truly believe that I’m capable of producing something and able to perform the way I should have in [the] Tokyo [Olympics].”
With the current situation, Obiena has filed a complaint against Patafa to the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), International Olympic Committee (IOC), and World Athletics (IAAF).
“I’ve filed formal complaints with the POC, IOC, and the World Athletics, as we are now talking standard defamation of character I have retained legal counsel and I do intend to pursue this vigorously,” said Obiena.
“So I see it futile for me to continue with the current situation that I have, therefore the most reasonable move for me is to consider every option, one of which is retirement.”
