ARELLANO University pulled the rug from under fancied Lyceum of the Philippines University, 26-24, 25-16, 25-16, creating a four-way logjam on the second spot in the National Collegiate Athletic Association women’s volleyball tournament at the San Andres Sports Complex on Wednesday.

Arellano started strong and stayed glued together after winning the extended first set en route to dominating the next two and snapping the Lady Pirates’ three-match winning streak.

With the win, Arellano found itself in a four-way tie at the second spot at 3-1 with Lyceum, idle University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, and Mapua which exerted enough effort before pulling off a hard-earned 25-23, 27-25, 21-25, 25-23 victory over winless Jose Rizal University.

Solo leader and defending champion College of Saint Benilde remains as the only undefeated team with a 4-0 record.

Marianne Padillon paced the Arellano Lady Chiefs with 12 points, Trina Abay had 11 points, including six blocks, while rookie Laika Tudlasan also scored 11 points.

Arellano actually made a twinkill as its men’s team also emerged victorious over LPU, 25-21, 25-10, 25-20, for a 3-1 record.

Jethro Cabillan scored half of his 12 points from blocks while Kim Tan had two blocks for a 11-point outing for the Chiefs.

Joan Doguna was the lone bright spot for the Lady Pirates with 13 points, as Johna Dolorito and Janeth Tulang could only muster seven points, while Jewel Maligmat only logged six points.

Tere Manalo took the scoring mantle for the Lady Cardinals with 21 points, including five service aces, and collected 10 digs while Nicole Ong had three blocks and two service aces to finish with 18 points. Rookie Roxie dela Cruz and Hannah de Guzman each scored 13 points.

Riza Rose scored a career-high 23 points, including two blocks, while Karyla Jasareno contributed 15 points and 16 digs for the Lady Bombers, who have lost four in a row in last place.
