ALEX EALA STUNS $60K SWISS TOURNEY DEBUT, PREVAILS AGAINST FRENCH FOE IN STRAIGHT SETS
Alex Eala came strong in her opening match with a resounding win against Margot Yerolymos of France in straight sets, 7, 6(6), 6-2, of the W60 Bellinzona in Switzerland Tuesday night, April 6.
The Filipina netter added another win in her flourishing professional career after defeating 23-year-old Yerolymos in 2 hours and 2 minutes match at the Tennis Club Bellinzona clay court and advanced to the second round of her first $60,000 tournament.
Despite struggling with nine of her 12 double faults in the opening frame, the Filipina sensation managed to hold off, which also struggled two at the tiebreak.
At 1-1 in the opening set, Eala trailed her way to manage a tiebreak—Yerolymos converted a breakpoint to lead at 2-1, then 2-3. At 4-4, the Filipino ace turned the tides as she fought off two break points to take the lead, 5-4 but the French responded with a hold of serve to even the first set at 5-5.
Each managed a serve forcing a deadlock.
Both players scored through minibreaks until Eala held serve to lead 5-3 but Yerolymos clawed its way to catch up at 5-5 and then 6-6.
The 15-year-old ruled over the tiebreak at 8-6, claiming the opening set.
In the second set, Eala held her momentum that allowed her to serve for the set at 5-2, but Yerolymos tried to crawl back in the game by saving two match points.
In the end, Eala clinched the victory at 6-2.
The Juniors World No. 3 Eala overpowered WTA No. 323. Yerolymos converted her ranking to improve to WTA no. 715.
Eala now will face WTA no. 206 Laura-Loana Paar of Romania, whom she defeated earlier this year in W25 Grenoble in France, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
