DICT ACTIVATES FREE WIFI IN ISOLATED TOWNS
THE DEPARTMENT of Information and Communications Technology has installed WiFis in remote areas in the provinces of Laguna, Quezon and Tarlac.
DICT’s Luzon Cluster 2 set up 66 WiFi access points in 22 villages in these provinces.
Through the Free Wi-Fi for All Program, the DICT aims to deploy last mile connectivity particularly in isolated and disadvantaged areas.
DICT Secretary Gregorio Honasan II said that his agency’s mission is to keep Filipinos connected.
“Your DICT endeavors to connect and reach all Filipinos nationwide regardless of their location. In this day and age where ICT plays an important function in society, we aim to open up opportunities for Filipinos to advance and thrive in the digital economy,” he said.
As of May 5, 8,924 sites have been installed by the DICT nationwide.
The Free Wi-Fi for All Program is mandated by Republic Act 10929 or the Free Internet Access in Public Places Act.
It aims to “provide free access to internet service in public places throughout the country, to promote knowledge-building among citizens and enable them to participate and compete in the evolving information and communication age.”
