/ 18 January 2024

A TOTAL of 15 inmates from the Marilao Municipal Jail in Bulacan have been enrolled under the Bachelor of Science in Midwifery.

According to a report by Punto.com, the inmates will study at the Bataan Peninsula State University as the university has been recently enrolled under the College Education Behind Bar.

BPSU President and former College of Midwifery Dean, Dr. Ruby Santos-Matibag said that the project initially had 45 applicants, but only 15 were accepted.

The students will attend their classes inside the prison, with free tuition and free BPSU uniforms from Tuesdays to Saturdays, where the teachers visit twice a month for practicum and laboratory requirements.

The students currently comprise a total of 10 male and five female inmates who are categorized as poor and were first enrolled in the program last September 11, 2023.

Santos-Marilag also said that she wants the students to experience face-to-face graduation, depending on the decision of the courts.

She added that she plans to extend the project to jails in Bataan.
