SOLONS SEEK PROBE ON HIGH BULLYING INCIDENCE IN SCHOOLS
THREE lawmakers are pushing for a resolution directing the House Committee on Basic Education and Culture to conduct an inquiry, in aid of legislation, on the reported high incidence of bullying in schools.
Representatives Bryan Revilla, Lani Mercado-Revilla and Ramon Jolo Revilla III filed House Resolution 1978 following the report of the Department of Education that from November 24, 2022 to January 11, 2024, there are 40 incidents of bullying in general, 27 cyberbullying, 83 physical bullying and 28 verbal bullying in schools.
DepEd Undersecretary Gina Gonong also remarked that bullying remained a pervasive problem, more so among boys and those in public schools.
In response to this alarming problem, DepEd announced in January that they plan to train teachers and parents to spot red flags to determine whether intervention is needed to address the challenges faced by students who may have experienced bullying.
The lawmakers reminded that it is necessary to protect children and learners from physical and psychosocial harm posed by the risk of bullying in educational institution in order to produce and mold academically inclined, well-rounded, and globally competent Filipinos.
They added that it is essential to develop the integrity of young learners, teach them compassion, and develop their strong moral character so that the government can build a just and human society where Filipino children can fulfill their dreams with love for country and in service of others.
