SENATOR Raffy Tulfo filed a resolution calling for an inquiry in aid of legislation on the decision of the University of Manila to not allow 140 civil engineering students to graduate despite collecting graduation fees
Senate Resolution 700 aims to invite the university’s president as well as officials of the Commission on Higher Education and students to attend the Senate hearing.
The graduating civil engineering students visited the office of the senator, along with CHEd representatives and UM officials on July 25 to discuss the issue.
All of the students said they received the same failing grade of 70 and the professor who gave the mark resigned immediately after issuing the score.
Tulfo shared that his staff who attended the meeting noticed that there were irregularities and grave injustice perpetrated by UM officials against the students.
The same observation was also given by Spocky Farolan, the lawyer of CHED, who claimed that the students were victims of estafa.
“Napag-alaman din sa nasabing paghaharap na pangkaraniwan na palang kalakaran ito,” Tulfo said.
The senator said what he found extremely alarming was the threat of the UM president during the meeting that everyone who fights with and gets on the bad side of the school ends up “dead.”
“Ang tanong: Mamamatay ba ang 24 senators at ang mismong Senado na mag-iimbestiga sa problemang ito ng UM tulad ng pasaring ng kanilang presidente?Abangan!,” Tulfo said.
