SENATE TACKLES MEASURES PROVIDING BENEFITS FOR PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS

/ 26 January 2023

THE SENATE Committee on Civil Service, Government Reorganization and Professional Regulation on Wednesday started tackling several measures that aim to provide additional benefits and incentives to public school teachers.

The committee led by Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. discussed measures that will give teachers a supplies allowance. The measure was filed by Revilla, Senators Juan Edgardo Angara, Jinggoy Estrada and Majority Leader Joel Villanueva.

The panel also discussed the bill that aims to amend Republic Act 4670 or the Magna Carta for Public School Teachers. The measure aims to give additional benefits for teaching and non-teaching personnel in public basic education and additional benefits and privileges for public school teachers.

“The lasting impact of our teachers in the lives and future of our children cannot be overemphasized. With their guidance, the wisdom of our children began to emerge. It is only fitting that we focus on the needs of our teachers, because focusing enough attention on their well-being also means high esteem for the young people they shape and the future we look forward to,” Revilla said.

During the hearing, Senator Robinhood Padilla expressed his support to the passage of the measures saying that the government should invest more in education.

“It is very sad that our teachers have to spend their own money for their classes’ needs because they think of their students’ welfare. Should we allow this to continue?” Padilla said.
