‘ROLLY’ WRECKS 226 SCHOOLS

The Department of Education yesterday reported that at least 226 schools were damaged as a result of the onslaught of Typhoon Rolly.

Partial figures from the DepEd showed that 138 classrooms were totally damaged, 289 had major damage and 609 had minor damage.

The DepEd said the estimated cost for rehabilitation and major repair for each school is P144,500, and P489,500 for reconstruction and rehabilitation.

The agency also reported that more than 82,000 persons are taking temporary shelter in some 869 public schools during the typhoon’s fury.

The DepEd added that a total of 21,000 families or 82,584 individuals are in the said schools across seven regions, with majority of the evacuees coming from the hard-hit Bicol Region at 11,049 families or 43,858 persons

“Rolly” is the strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

The Education department also reported that at least 7,169 learning materials and 194 computer sets were damaged as well by the typhoon.
