LAWMAKERS WANT ‘BONIFACIO’ SUBJECT TAUGHT IN HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE

/ 9 November 2020

THE MAKABAYAN bloc at the House of the Representatives filed a bill that seeks to include the life and works of Andres Bonifacio in the secondary and tertiary curricula.

House Bill 324 or the proposed Andres Bonifacio Act was filed by Kabataan Partylist Rep. Sarah Jane Elago, ACT Teachers Partylist Rep. France Castro, Bayan Muna Partylist Representatives Isagani Zarate, Ferdinand Gaite and Eufemia Cullamat and Gabriela Women’s Partylist Rep. Arlene Brosas.

They said that students should know Bonifacio better as he is also a national hero alongside Jose Rizal.

“Introducing a course on his life in high school and college will strengthen the values of nationalism and patriotism,” the lawmakers  said in their explanatory note.

They said  that the bill seeks to instil lessons on national independence, collective action, civic consciousness and patriotism.

The bill mandates the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education to approve the materials and textbooks needed in teaching the subject.
