LAWMAKER WANTS ENTREPRENEURSHIP SUBJECT IN HIGH SCHOOL

/ 13 December 2020

LAS Piñas Rep. Camille Villar has filed a bill that seeks to introduce entrepreneurship as a separate subject in Junior and Senior High School.

In pushing for House Bill 8159, Villar explained that entrepreneurship, the practice of starting new organizations or revitalizing mature organizations, particularly new businesses generally in response to identified opportunites, is a key driver of the economy.

“Wealth and a high majority of jobs are created by small businesses started by entrepreneurially minded individuals, many of whom go on to create big businesses,” she said in her explanatory note.

The lawmaker said that entrepreneurship education focuses on developing real-world skills.

“Students learn to understand the product development cycle, come up with their own unique business proposals, and deliver multiple pitch presentations,” she added.

Under the bill, the Education Secretary shall appoint a Head Subject Specialist who shall be the lead person in coordinating all activities necessary for the development and implementation of the entrepreneurship subject.

The Head Subject Specialist will conduct a multi-sectoral consultation with educators from public and private high schools, members of the national chambers of commerce and industry.
