CAMARINES Sur 3rd District Rep. Gabriel Bordado Jr. filed a measure that seeks to establish a basic education school in all indigenous peoples communities in the country.

House Bill 6023 or the School for Every Indigenous Peoples Community Act of 2022 mandates the Department of Education, in coordination with the Department of Public Works and Highways, to formulate the rules and regulations for the establishment of at least one Basic Education School in every IP Community.

The proposed law allocates an initial P100 million budget for the implementation of the program.

“For quality education to be truly accessible to everyone, we must ensure that those who belong to minority groups are included as well,” Bordado said in his explanatory note.

He cited data from the Department of Education showing that there are 2.529 million IP learners in 42,176 public schools during the first decade of the Indigenous Peoples Education Program.

“Despite the presence of numerous programs, many among the indigenous communities still struggle to find access to education. These programs need to be further strengthened and supplemented in order to insure their success,” Bordado said.
