LAWMAKER PUSHES REVIEW OF GUN LAWS, SCHOOL SECURITY AFTER TACLOBAN SHOOTING

/ 24 June 2026

SENATOR JV Ejercito has called for a thorough review of firearm regulations, school security measures, and youth safety programs following the fatal shooting incident at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City, Leyte on Monday.

Ejercito expressed deep concern over the violence that unfolded inside a school, stressing that educational institutions must remain safe spaces for learning and development.

“Schools should be safe spaces for learning,” Ejercito said, describing the incident as deeply alarming and emphasizing that no one, especially students, should be exposed to such violence.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the shooting, which reportedly involved minor suspects. Officials have urged the public and the media to exercise caution and sensitivity in handling information related to the case, given the age of those involved.

The senator said the incident raises serious questions about how the suspects were able to gain access to firearms despite lacking the legal authority to possess or handle them.

He called for a review of existing gun ownership laws and stronger efforts to curb the proliferation of loose firearms nationwide.

“Firearms do not simply end up in the hands of a minor if they are kept by a responsible owner,” Ejercito said, underscoring the accountability that comes with gun ownership.

The lawmaker also urged the Philippine National Police and other law enforcement agencies to conduct a comprehensive investigation and file appropriate charges if violations of firearm laws are established.

This includes holding registered firearm owners accountable if their weapons were improperly secured and subsequently accessed by minors.

Ejercito further called for stronger coordination among the Philippine National Police, the Department of Education, and local government units to enhance school security across the country.

Among the measures he proposed are the review and strengthening of school security protocols and crisis management systems to ensure educational institutions are better prepared to respond to emergencies and prevent similar incidents in the future.
