LAWMAKER EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER FREQUENT DISRUPTION OF EDUCATION DUE TO DISASTERS
SENATOR Christopher ‘Bong’ Go expressed concern over the frequent disruption of education caused by disasters, as schools are often converted into temporary shelters.
He called for measures to ensure education continuity for children affected by calamities.
“Education is crucial for the future of our youth. It should not be interrupted due to the lack of proper evacuation centers,” he said.
This advocacy aligns with Go’s legislative efforts, such as the recently enacted RA 12077, or the Student Loan Payment Moratorium During Disasters and Emergencies Act, which offers temporary financial relief for students with outstanding loans during emergencies.
“We need to support our students during disasters. This law gives them the chance to continue their studies even in times of crisis,” Go explained, noting his role as co-author and co-sponsor of the law.
At the same time, Go emphasized the importance of proactive disaster preparedness.
“Safety must always be our priority. In the face of disasters, we must be ready and respond quickly,” said Go, urging both national and local governments to strengthen disaster management strategies.
As a strong advocate for disaster resilience, Go renewed his push for the establishment of the Department of Disaster Resilience through Senate Bill No. 188.
The proposed department aims to centralize and streamline disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts nationwide.
Go also stressed the need for pre-disaster planning, better coordination among local government units and agencies, and prepositioning of relief goods.
He underscored the importance of long-term solutions that go beyond immediate relief.
