LAWMAKER CLARIFIES PMA AND PNPA ARE PART OF EDUCATION SECTOR

/ 6 January 2025

SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian on Sunday stressed that the Philippine Military Academy or PMA and the Philippine National Police Academy or PNPA are part of the education sector, which will receive the largest allocation in the 2025 national budget.

Gatchalian clarified that, according to the Constitution, the education sector encompasses basic education, state universities and colleges, the Commission on Higher Education, and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.

The senator explained that every graduate of the PMA and PNPA earns a bachelor’s degree diploma, similar to graduates of SUCs like UP.

He added that the PMA and PNPA have specializations in military and police training but are still considered educational institutions under the education sector.

Because of this, over P1 trillion is allocated to the education sector in the 2025 national budget.

Some groups have stated that they plan to bring issues concerning the national budget to the Supreme Court, claiming that the Department of Public Works and Highways received a larger allocation than education, which they argue is a violation of the Constitution.
