/ 4 August 2026

THE DEPARTMENT of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has launched “The Wonderful West Philippine Sea,”the country’s first three-part e-book series aimed at introducing young Filipinos to the rich marine biodiversity of the West Philippine Sea, promoting environmental conservation, and highlighting its importance to the nation.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the first installment, “The Wonderful West Philippine Sea with Pawi the Sea Turtle,” follows the adventure of Pawi, a curious sea turtle that explores the mangroves, seagrass beds, coral reefs, and coastal communities found in the West Philippine Sea.

According to Castro, the DENR-developed e-book seeks to help children better understand the importance of the West Philippine Sea not only as a natural resource but also as a source of food security, livelihood, and shared heritage.

“Makakatulong ang e-book para maintindihan ng mga kabataan ang kahalagahan ng food security, kabuhayan sa karagatan, at shared heritage, gayundin ang kahalagahan ng 2016 Arbitral Award sa simpleng paraan,” Castro said.

Aside from serving as an educational tool for students and young readers, the Palace Press Office said the e-book may also be used as a reference material by lawmakers and other stakeholders.

The e-book series also includes interactive activities such as species identification exercises, a coloring book, and a family pledge encouraging children and their families to take part in environmental protection efforts.

Among the simple conservation practices promoted are reducing the use of single-use plastics, proper waste disposal, conserving water, and participating in community clean-up activities.
