DICT EXPANDS ESTABLISHMENT OF TECH4ED CENTERS

/ 1 December 2024

THE DEPARTMENT of Information and Communications Technology is expanding its digital services and ICT initiatives, including the establishment of Tech4Ed centers in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas in the Davao region.

DICT-Davao Technical Operations Division Chief Engineer Eduardo Tuquib said the agency is addressing ICT-related challenges through projects like Tech4Ed centers and free WiFi access.

Tech4Ed centers serve as hubs offering various services, including training programs, co-working spaces, and internet connectivity.

“These projects are key priorities under the Philippine Digital Infrastructure Project. They play a critical role in empowering communities and bridging the digital divide,” Tuquib explained.

Jose Benjamin Valencia II, DICT-Davao’s focal person for Free WiFi and the National Broadband Project, reported that 93 Tech4Ed sites are now operational in the region, with approximately 56 training sessions conducted.

As of November 2024, DICT is working to acquire 243 additional free WiFi locations. These include 20 sites in public institutions and universities, 27 sites in Davao Oriental municipalities, and 196 sites in other municipalities across the region.
