ACT Teachers Party-list Representative and Deputy Minority Leader Antonio Tinio has renewed his call for the immediate passage of the proposed Teacher Protection Bill following the death of a teacher in New Washington, Aklan, who was allegedly physically assaulted by a young adult.

Tinio expressed condolences to the victim’s family, colleagues, and the entire school community, saying the incident serves as a tragic reminder of the growing threats faced by teachers both within and outside school premises.

“This heartbreaking incident is not an isolated tragedy,” Tinio said, citing another recent case in Davao de Oro where a teacher was reportedly punched by students.

He said the incidents highlight what he described as a disturbing increase in violence against educators, stressing the need to strengthen measures that protect teachers and uphold their dignity and safety.

According to Tinio, the attacks reflect a culture of impunity and weak accountability, emphasizing that the education system must do more to promote respect for human rights, empathy, and social responsibility among learners.

The lawmaker renewed his appeal for the immediate passage of House Bill No. 437, or the Teacher Protection Bill, which he co-authored.

The proposed measure seeks to provide stronger legal safeguards for teachers against harassment, threats, administrative abuse, and physical violence.

Tinio said the bill is currently undergoing technical working group discussions at the committee level to ensure that it provides comprehensive legal assistance and psychosocial support mechanisms for educators.

Aside from the proposed legislation, Tinio called for broader reforms, including faster and impartial delivery of justice for victims, expanded access to mental health services, addressing the shortage of guidance counselors, and strengthening values education to promote accountability and respect.

He also urged concerned government agencies to provide full assistance to the bereaved family and reiterated the need to make schools and communities safer places for both teachers and students.
