/ 21 February 2022

THE UNIVERSITY of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines signed a memorandum of agreement with the local government of Cagayan de Oro on the implementation of Covid19 measures.

Under the agreement, the school’s Center for Artificial Intelligence developed an application to help the LGU implement the physical distancing policy in public spaces.

Dubbed as the “SpaceBetweenUs: A Computer Vision Application for Physical Distance in Public Areas,” the application aims to help the city in its fight against Covid19.

The app’s “computer vision will give a more efficient way of monitoring physical distance, especially in public areas where the risks are high,” it said.

The application was developed by engineers Wencel Jean C. Dacay, Mark Lister Nalupa, Jodie Rey D. Fernandez and Clynt Neiko Rupinta from the Center for AI.

The project was sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development, Science, Technology, US Agency for International Development Research and Innovation for Development, RTI International and De La Salle University.
