UP LAUNCHES ARTS PROGRAM FOR INDIGENOUS, MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES
THE UNIVERSITY of the Philippines has launched an interactive arts and culture program in collaboration with state universities, public education institutions, and community-based organizations.
The initiative aims to empower indigenous peoples and marginalized communities across the Philippines through cultural engagement and artistic expression.
The program officially began earlier this month with an interactive concert by UP Kontra-GaPi (Kontemporaryong Gamelang Pilipino) at the Philippine Science High School in Butuan City.
Kontra-GaPi, an ensemble of musician-performers, uses rhythms, sounds, movements, and costumes inspired by the indigenous cultures of Southeast Asia to create immersive artistic experiences.
Led by Art History Professor Pedro Abraham, the group has gained international recognition for its innovative approach to arts education and cultural ambassadorship.
“As a vital part of the country’s public higher education system, the University finds it critical to intensify efforts toward positive national transformation through active collaboration and by grounding our strengths in local communities,” said UP President Angelo Jimenez.
“We aim to encourage participation from indigenous and marginalized communities, showcasing how their traditions have inspired innovations in many disciplines, including internationally acclaimed musical performances,” he added.
The program’s first stop was in the CARAGA region, covering the five provinces of Region XIII in Northeastern Mindanao, where UP, the Commission on Higher Education, and local educational institutions signed a “Declaration of Support for Culture and the Arts.”
