UP HIT FOR DISALLOWING 14 STUDENTS TO GRADUATE

/ 5 August 2020

THE GRADUATING class of the UP College of Nursing for the second semester of school year 2019-2020 expressed dismay over the UP administration’s alleged inconsistencies in endorsing students for graduation.

According to the UP Nursing Student Council, only 34 students from the class of 2020 were endorsed to the Office of the Chancellor by the UPCN College Council during its last meeting held on July 23.

UP-NSC claimed that 14 students were not endorsed because of lack of coordination between the faculty and different administrative levels. The 14 students were unable to join the Online UP Manila University Commencement Exercises.

“There was a notable disparity with what the faculty and what the students were made of, therefore this insinuates that the students were kept in the dark without being updated on the processes in the administrative and teaching levels,” UP-NSC said in a statement.

The student council reiterated that even after the students had completed 70% of the requirements as mandated by the faculty members, the 14 students were still not endorsed for graduation.

They also pointed out that the faculty and college council ignored and disrespected the call for everyone in the batch to participate in the commencement exercises and that no student be left behind.

“After numerous attempts by the batch council and the student council to obtain a clear and plausible explanation of events, the only response received was that some information was confidential and that a statement from the administration would not solve the problem,” the student council said.

The students demanded that the UP administration be transparent and accountable for its policies and actions regarding the rights and welfare of the students.

“We call on the administration of the UP College of Nursing and the Office of the Chancellor to take necessary actions to address this issue and allow these students to be a part of the culmination of all the years of their hard work,” they said.
