UE URGED TO SHOW COMPASSION TO STUDENT-ATHLETES
REPRESENTATIVES of student groups in the University of the East on Friday again appealed to school officials to reconsider their decision stripping athletes of their scholarships.
Earlier this month, the university dissolved at least five sports team and fully removed the scholarship grants of the athletes.
The affected athletes are from taekwondo, chess, softball, weightlifting, and fencing teams.
The UE University Student Council, along with captains of sports teams, asked school officials to allow the athletes to enroll without charging them.
“After all, these student athletes have never failed in giving recognition to our University and it is not fair to abruptly take the scholarship that they truly deserved,” the groups said in a letter to David Chua, vice president of UE Board of Trustees.
The group also asked the school to waive the surcharge fee for the athletes who were not able to pay on time.
“Given the situation that they are going through, it is hard for them to easily cope with the situation and find the necessary amount needed for their tuition,” it said.
“This is the least that the University administration can do for the student athletes who fought for the pride and honor of the school. Show them some compassion,” the group added.
“Never that the sudden revocation of their scholarships a day before the start of classes will ever be right. The University will not lose money in granting this request because the admission of the athletes would still give profit,” it said.
