UE STUDENT GROUP DEMANDS TUITION INCREASE TRANSPARENCY

/ 3 August 2021

A STUDENT group at the University of the East asked school officials to explain the sudden increase in tuition and other fees for Academic Year 2021-2022.

In a letter to UE President Ester Garcia, the University Student Council said it received a complaint from a student who disclosed that his tuition increased by almost P4,300 based on his online registration.

“It has come to our attention that the total amount of tuition fee changed upon enrollment. There are unnecessary and hidden fees that suddenly appear in the process of enrollment which made it higher than the usual,” the letter read.

“When the student attempted to enroll all the subjects and was about to pay the enrollment fee, the laboratory fee suddenly appears,” it added.

The student body also asked the school administration to address the concern of learners whose tuition were paid in full but received an online notice of a balance.

“For the past months, we have been experiencing glitches as what the administration made as an excuse for those unnecessary fees that we are required to pay,” USC said.

“We have had enough and this kind of system glitches, if it really is, is not acceptable anymore. We have been paying those fees even though we are not consuming a single service from it,” it added.

The group urged school officials to release a transparency report as well as a detailed breakdown and description of fees.

“The students have been generously paying these fees even though most of us are suffering and struggling from those anti-student policies implemented in our university,” it said.

“In this trying time, compassion is not the only thing that we need, we also need an administration who heeds and never neglects the welfare and interest of their students,” it added.
