UE DENOUNCES HAZING DEATH OF SALILIG
THE UNIVERSITY of the East on Friday denounced the hazing death of Adamson University student John Matthew Salilig.
“The University strongly condemns the hazing incident, and any form of violence committed inside or outside the school premises,” UE President Dr. Zosimo Batad said in a statement.
“We deeply sympathize with the family of the student during this difficult time, and we pray that they be accorded the justice they deserve,” he added.
Batad said the university is committed to strictly implement Republic Act 11053 or the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018.
“The University shall widely disseminate its policies relative to hazing and will impose the necessary sanctions for violations of these policies,” he said.
On February 28, the body of Salilig, a chemical engineering student, was found in a shallow grave in Imus, Cavite, more than a week after he was last seen alive.
At a Senate hearing on Tuesday, a witness said that Tau Gamma Phi members refused to bring Salilig to the hospital after he had a seizure during the fraternity’s welcoming rites.
Authorities have filed complaints for violation of the Anti-Hazing Law against six individuals linked to the death of Salilig.
