PSAU GETS FUNDING FOR TAMARIND PROJECT
THE Pampanga State Agricultural University has received funding for a project that aims to mainstream tamarind or sampaloc.
In a report by SunStar.com, Dr. Anita David, PSAU president, said that the university is set to receive P33 million for the project, which will come from the Department of Science and Technology’s Niche Center for R&D in the Regions.
With this variety, this town has become the tamarind capital of the Philippines, the report also said.
PSAU initially produced a sweet variety of tamarind, which has since been patented and registered and was named after the late Professor Andres Aglibut who headed its creation.
The university will produce wine, juice, candies, jam, and other products from the fruit and will be in charge of production, promotion, and distribution.
The project, which supports local farmers, is planted inside PSAU’s 45-hectare farm inside its campus grounds.
