PLM STUDENTS PRESS FOR ALTERNATIVE GRADING SYSTEM
A COALITION of student organizations pressed officials of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila to adopt a modified grading system.
Led by the PLM Supreme Student Council, the group said the school must exercise leniency in light of the various problems encountered by learners during online classes.
“As the PLM community approaches the end of the academic year, it is only fitting that we all continue with our best practice of acknowledging each other’s struggles and coping together through the distress that the crisis entails,” it said.
“Hence, a proposal for an Alternative Grading System is regarded to, at the very least, allow for a system of education suited for the current circumstances,” it added.
The coalition recommended that students who cannot pass the requirements on time should not be given a failing mark.
Instead, these students should be given an incomplete remark and given at least one year to complete the academic requirements.
“In essence, this policy aims to allow the students to consider their personal needs ahead of or along with their academic obligations which will subsequently afford the students the ability to focus on the core of education — learning and understanding. By adopting this amid a national crisis, we hope to provide those who are hesitant to continue with more reasons to do so,” the group said.
It also sought an “adequate student representation” during the drafting and finalization of the Implementing Rules and Regulations for the adjusted grading system.
“The People’s Caring University should care for its people by taking the lead in actions appropriate to the current situation. Subsequently, we must recognize that the higher form of the call for academic leniency calls for our safe return to face-to-face classes,” it said.
