STUDENTS from the Philippine Science High School System Central Visayas and Main campuses were victorious in the Singapore International STEM Innovation 2023.

They won the gold, silver and bronze awards to edge out over 289 participants from 14 countries.

Nicole Conrad Obrero of PSHS-CVisC bagged the gold award in Design and Build Challenge for her “PENGUIN-EERING” design to alleviate the heat buildup on residential districts.

Angel Karl Gordo, also from PSHS-CVisC, won the bronze in the same category for his “HYDRO or Hydroponic High-Yield System for Sustainable Crop Development and Rooftop Farm Optimization.”

In the STEM Innovation Challenge, the team of Krystelle Sanchez, Gordo and Obrero clinched the bronze award for their innovation “DILAW or Direct Identification of Bleach Using Low-Cost Paper Sensor for Assessment of Water Bodies.”

For their project “Intelligent Food Organizer Magnets,” PSHS-MC students Kevin William Castro, John Florence Dizon and Erwin Aenas Vibal bagged the silver award in the STEM Innovation Challenge.

The winning protype aims to reduce food waste due to spoilage by providing its users with information on the freshness of food using easy-to-recognize fridge magnets and time-based light indicators.

Vibal, along with international students, received the Best Engineering Product special award in the Design and Build Challenge.

The award recognized their exceptional collaboration and problem-solving skills during a 24-hour design challenge, where students from different countries worked together.

The PSHS commended the students for their achievements.

“The whole PSHS System commends all of the participating Pisay students and teacher coaches who work together in pursuit of excellence and in shaping a more sustainable world through science,” it said.

With the theme “Designing A Sustainable Tomorrow”, the competition was held at the National Junior College in Singapore from May 24-29, 2023.
