CAGAYAN STATE U STUDENTS DEVELOP 3-IN-1 BOUGAINVILLEA VARIETY

/ 14 May 2021

STUDENTS of the Cagayan State University  developed a rare 3-in-1 Bougainvillea variety, a genus of thorny ornamental vines and bushes.

The 3-in-1 variety and more than 20 other varieties and rootstocks were developed in the university’s Gonzaga campus.

Agriculture students Jemyma Rasos, Maritess Rubas, Jay Fred Nantes, Andres Dres, and Jason Felix mobilized the Department of Science and Technology-DATBED project titled “Production and Commercialization of Multiple-Grafted Bonsai Bougainvillea Plants and Bougainvillea Potting Mix.”

The project aims to showcase technologies on high value ornamental plant propagation and production.

The students were guided by professors Jeff Opena and Lyle Sumer and Dean Claribel Gaspar.

The project also aims to produce a biotechnology-based bougainvillea potting mix.

The DOST-DATBED project seeks to enhance the entrepreneurial skills, acquire asexual propagation, and horticultural capabilities of students.
