AT LEAST 3 PUP STUDENTS BAG THE DOST RESEARCH GRANT
THREE students from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines snagged a research grant under the 2020 Young Innovators Program of the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development.
Irah Faye Garzon, Raven Elyze Laurella, and Ghimel Espinosa and their mentor Dr. Lourdes Alvarez will receive up to P800,000 to develop their research study titled “A Fungal chitosan-based Microbeads: A Heavy Metal Soil-Based Biobsorbent”.
The DOST-PCIEERD and the students signed the grant contract.
The grant will cover laboratory expenses, testing consumables, and honorarium for the teachers and students.
DOST-PCIEERD Executive Director Dr. Enrico Paringit lauded the young researchers for conducting the research amid the pandemic.
“We express admiration for the young researchers on their determination to take on challenges to conduct research and development projects that offer solutions. They will serve as our bright spots for the future of science and technology in our country. They will also serve as an inspiration for younger generations to follow,” Dr. Paringit said.
YIP was established in 2017 and has since supported 20 teams of high school, undergraduate, and graduate students.
