UP CHANCELLOR CLARIFIES GUIDELINES ON CLASS SUSPENSION

/ 9 November 2020

UNIVERSITY of the Philippines Chancellor Fidel Nemenzo has clarified the scope of the class suspension guidelines during storms issued by the university.

Nemenzo said that class suspension will be on a case-to-case basis and should be applied with consideration “for the students’ place of residence, or where they have chosen to participate in synchronous or asynchronous classes.”

He added that the previous guidelines do not mean that an entire class will be automatically suspended.

“Places of residence of students in one class differ. It is possible for one class to have students who are not affected by the typhoon, while some may be affected by the different storm signals (1, 2 or 3 and above),” Nemenzo said.

He added that faculty members should give consideration to students who might miss classes after being affected by the typhoon.

Affected students should communicate with the faculty so that necessary class adjustments could be made.

If a faculty member gets affected, he or she should also inform the school.

“The spirit behind Memorandum No. FRN-20-058 is to ensure that affected students (and faculty) do not have to worry about their classes while faced with devastation caused by the typhoon (and/or crisis conditions brought about by the pandemic,” Nemenzo said.

“Let compassion, respect, mutual care and utmost consideration of the faculty and students’ well-being be our guiding principles in these extraordinary times,” he added.
