LAWMAKER SUPPORTS DA-UNICEF PARTNERSHIP TO COMBAT EARLY CHILDHOOD MALNUTRITION

/ 2 March 2025

SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian lauded the partnership between the Department of Agriculture (DA) and UNICEF aimed at addressing early childhood malnutrition in the Philippines.

He emphasized that this initiative, which focuses on nutrition-sensitive agriculture, complements ongoing efforts to provide children with a strong educational foundation.

Gatchalian highlighted that the country’s education crisis cannot be resolved unless early childhood malnutrition is urgently addressed.

“The education crisis we face today will continue if we do not act swiftly to reduce early childhood malnutrition,” Gatchalian stated.

He pointed out that the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM II) had previously revealed that one in four children in the country is stunted. This condition impedes physical growth and development, with long-term negative effects on cognitive development, school performance, and overall health, significantly affecting the future potential of youth.

The senator also expressed strong support for the imminent signing of the Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) System Act, which will further enhance early childhood programs across the nation.

The bill is expected to provide a much-needed boost to services related to health, nutrition, and early childhood education. Gatchalian believes this measure will ensure that children, particularly those under five, receive the care and support necessary for healthy development.

Once signed into law, the ECCD System Act will require local government units to take an active role in delivering critical programs and services for young children, focusing on health and nutrition.

Gatchalian stressed that proper nutrition during early childhood is essential for better health outcomes and a brighter future for the next generation.

“By providing proper nutrition to our youth, we can secure a better future for them,” said Gatchalian.

He reiterated that good nutrition is not only crucial for physical development but also for academic achievement and long-term success.

This initiative, in collaboration with UNICEF and the Department of Agriculture, aims to address malnutrition at its roots by incorporating sustainable agricultural practices into the delivery of nutrition.

As the country continues to struggle with high rates of childhood malnutrition, Gatchalian’s support for the DA-UNICEF partnership marks a critical step forward in improving the well-being of the nation’s youth. He concluded by urging government agencies and local communities to work together to ensure the success of these programs and secure the future of Filipino children.
