SUICIDAL STUDENTS NEED HELP, SAYS MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCACY GROUP

/ 10 October 2020

A MENTAL health advocacy page called on netizens to break the stigma against suicide saying those struggling with problems need help.

Hey Hay PH -Mental Health Support said that students with suicidal tendencies are not weak but need help.

“I hope you find it in your heart to understand that these students need help. But that doesn’t mean that they are weak. Let’s break the mental health stigma,” it said on Facebook.

It said that being vulnerable “is part of being human.”

“Living with anxiety is not a weakness. Showing up and doing everything amidst having so many anxious thoughts take a lot of strength that most people will never know,” it added.

The advisory came following reports of students committing suicide because of difficulties in coping with their online learning.

The most recent  case was of a student from South Cotabato who reportedly committed suicide a day after classes started on October 5, 2020. The teenager reportedly told his mother that he was struggling with his Math module.

Comments such as ”Ang babaw. Parang module lang nag-suicide na” and ‘boomers’ flooded social media.

Netizens lauded the advisory posted by Hey Hay PH -Mental Health and aired their support for students experiencing mental distress because of the novel mode of learning.
