INSPIRED by the Cordillera folk song “Dong Dong Ay!”, the Book Nook Conference 2024 emphasized the strength of unity in promoting reading among Filipino youth.

The spirit of collaboration was palpable as attendees reaffirmed their commitment to the mission: “Aklat para sa lahat.”

From August 28 to 30, area coordinators and partners from 113 Book Nook sites across the Philippines gathered at the National Library of the Philippines (NLP) in Manila for the annual conference, organized by the National Book Development Board (NBDB). The event provided a space for volunteers and representatives to exchange insights, share best practices, and elevate standards for their reading centers.

Participants engaged in discussions, tackling challenges, sharing success stories, and brainstorming solutions. Key sessions focused on improving decision-making, program execution, and problem-solving across the country’s diverse regions.

NBDB Chairperson Dante Francis “Klink” Ang II and NLP Director Cesar Gilbert Adriano welcomed 79 delegates representing 113 sites. Over the next two days, NBDB officials led practical sessions to equip site partners with tools and skills to enrich their community reading spaces.

In her opening remarks, NBDB Executive Director Charisse Aquino-Tugade updated participants on the project’s progress, stressing the importance of nurturing a nationwide reading culture. “Reading should not just be an event or program, but a habit,” she urged.

The second day featured actor and activist Mae Paner (Juana Change) moderating discussions on inclusive and forward-thinking reading spaces. Several standout sites were recognized for their unique strategies in overcoming challenges, such as BN Guinobatan (Albay) for innovation, BN Carles (Iloilo) for inclusivity, and BN Sagay (Negros Occidental) for expansion.
