CAMPUS PUBLICATIONS UNITE TO DENOUNCE MARTIAL LAW ANNIVERSARY

/ 20 September 2020

CAMPUS publications around the country bonded and denounced the 48th anniversary of the Martial Law declaration to recall the atrocities committed under the Marcos era.

A total of 56 publications signed a statement condemning the recent attacks on press freedom in and out of school grounds, highlighted by the recent attacks against media giant ABS-CBN and Rappler Chief Executive Officer  Maria Ressa.

In Sept. 21, 1972, then President Marcos placed the country under Martial Law, resulting in the repression of the media and the rampant human rights abuses committed, which the publications consider as parallel to what the Duterte administration is currently doing.

They noted the similarity with Marcos and President Duterte is staggering as both resorted to militarization and crafted ‘anti-poor’ policies during their reign.

“In these crucial times, it is only imperative that we, campus journalists and the Filipino people, become part of history by taking a stand, speaking out, and joining the fight of the broad masses. Campus journalists will be among the crowd of fearless Filipinos to say ‘NEVER AGAIN TO DICTATORSHIP AND TYRANNY!’” the statement read.

The group also urged everyone to participate in a physical protest which it will launch at the Bantayog ng Mga Bayani in Quezon City to voice out its concern and to prevent Marcos from rising in power.

The publications which signed the statement were the Alyansa ng Kabataang Mamamahayag ng PUP, Ang Pamantasan, Ang Pahayagang Plaridel, Ang Tagamasid, Budyong, Fiat Lux, Herald, Himati, La Nouvelle, Matanglawin Ateneo, NCPAG-Umalohokan, Outcrop, RedWire, REGINA, TAPIOCA, The Angelite, The Appraise, The Beacon Publications, The Catalyst, The DEMOCRAT, The Engineering Spectrum, The Equalizer, The Forefront, The Forum, The Lifeline, The Manila Collegian, The PANTOGRAPH x MALAYA, and The PILLARS Publication.
